This role is completely remote-friendly . If you happen to live close to one of our physical office locations, our doors are open for you to come into the office as often as you'd like. For this role, we prefer someone willing to work East Coast (EST/EDT) business hours to accommodate a multi-timezone team.

The role and the team: As an Engineering Manager, ML Understanding, you will lead our ML Understanding team and unlock the full potential of Reddit’s vast content through cutting-edge AI. The MLU Team develops foundational AI models and leverages the latest advances in LLMs to deeply understand content and communities and represent users’ rich and varied interests. The team’s foundational work drives impact by enabling relevant, personalized experiences, enhanced insights, and accelerated development for Reddit product teams.

• Define Technical Vision & Strategy: Define the technical vision and long-term roadmap for ML Understanding, aligning cutting-edge AI solutions with Reddit’s product and business objectives.
• Team Leadership & Development: Coach and support the development of your team, constantly seeking opportunities to grow their skills and impact.
• Cross-Functional Partnership: Work with cross-functional partners from across the company to identify key areas of opportunity, set expectations, and communicate your team’s work.
• Technical Execution & Delivery: Oversee the design, development, and optimization of machine learning pipelines that leverage LLMs, including fine-tuning models.
• Platform & Infrastructure Collaboration: Collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams to chart a path to the next generation of AI-powered solutions for Reddit.
• Operational Excellence: Maintain high standards for system performance, reliability, and efficiency in alignment with customer needs and responsible AI principles.
• Recruiting & Growth: Partner with our incredible recruiting team to attract, interview, and hire diverse and talented machine learning engineers, growing a world-class team.

Who You Might Be:

• Experience Leading ML Teams: 2+ years of experience building and managing high-performing machine learning teams.
• Deep ML Expertise: Deep hands-on experience working with machine learning models, specifically with Large Language Models (LLMs), and deploying them in large-scale production systems.
• Technical Domain Knowledge: Strong understanding of natural language processing, deep learning, transformer-based architectures, and AI model development.
• Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and communicate a clear, compelling technical strategy that supports broader company objectives and addresses the needs of internal customers.
• Impact-Driven Mindset: Passion for developing scalable, well-designed, and responsible AI solutions that drive business value.
• Exceptional Communication & Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical topics to diverse audiences and build strong relationships with cross-functional partners

Pay Transparency:

This job posting may span more than one career level.

In addition to base salary, this job is eligible to receive equity in the form of restricted stock units, and depending on the position offered, it may also be eligible to receive a commission. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including, skills, depth of work experience and relevant licenses/credentials, and may vary from the amounts listed below.

The base pay range for this position is:

$230,000—$322,000 USD
